A Small Toilet Leak Caused Major Water Damage – Here's Why You Shouldn't Ignore It

Sometimes the biggest plumbing problems start with the smallest leaks.

We recently attended a home in Perth where the homeowners noticed water staining on the ceiling below their upstairs bathroom. At first, they thought it might have been caused by rain or condensation, but the real problem was an internal leak from the upstairs toilet.

By the time we arrived, the leak had already caused significant damage throughout the home.

What We Found

The toilet was leaking internally around the pan connection, allowing water to slowly escape every time it was flushed. Because the toilet was located on the second floor, the leaking water travelled through the floor structure before appearing downstairs.

The leak had already caused:

  • Water damage to the ceiling below
  • A wet electrical downlight that required attention
  • Damage to timber floorboards around the toilet
  • Water staining that will require ceiling repairs and repainting

This is a good example of how a plumbing leak can remain hidden until the damage becomes obvious elsewhere in the home.

Why Internal Toilet Leaks Are Often Missed

Unlike a burst pipe, many toilet leaks happen slowly over weeks or even months. Homeowners may not notice anything unusual until they see water stains, peeling paint or damp ceilings downstairs.

Common warning signs include:

  • Water around the base of the toilet
  • Soft or swollen flooring
  • Damp ceilings below an upstairs bathroom
  • Musty smells
  • Unexplained increases in your water bill
  • The sound of water running when the toilet isn't being used

The Importance of Fixing the Problem Early

The plumbing repair is often the least expensive part of the job.

If a leak is left unattended, homeowners may also need to pay for:

  • Ceiling repairs
  • Painting
  • Floor repairs or replacement
  • Electrical inspection if water reaches light fittings or wiring
  • Mould remediation if moisture remains trapped

What could have been a straightforward plumbing repair can quickly become a much larger restoration project.

How We Diagnosed the Leak

When we arrived, the source of the leak wasn't immediately obvious. Water was appearing through the downstairs ceiling beneath the upstairs bathroom, but leaks like this can originate from several different plumbing fixtures.

To accurately identify the cause, we carried out a systematic investigation using specialised leak detection equipment.

First, we completed a pressure test on the plumbing system to determine whether the water supply pipework was losing pressure. The results indicated the plumbing system was holding pressure, allowing us to rule out a burst water pipe.

We then used a specialised inspection camera to investigate around the toilet and surrounding areas without unnecessary damage to the property. This enabled us to trace the source of the leak to the toilet connection, where water was escaping during use.

By correctly diagnosing the fault before carrying out repairs, we avoided unnecessary demolition and ensured the problem was repaired the first time.

We pressure test the water pipes in the wall just incase there is a leak under the tiling which we can not see. In this case there was no leaks coming from the water pipes behind the tiles in the wall.
This toilet connector bend was also leaking when flushing the toilet. Also they did not seal the gap between the tile and pipe penetration which is how the water was running down stairs below, causing damages.

Unfortunately, the leak had already caused:

  • Water damage to the downstairs ceiling

  • Moisture entering a recessed downlight, creating a potential electrical hazard

  • Damage to the timber floorboards around the upstairs toilet

  • Ceiling staining that will require repair and repainting

We serviced the toilet, replaced the connecting bend. Also sealed around the pipe penetration, to prevent leak going down stairs again.
We removed the rusted flexi hose that was installed under the toilet. We changed the configuration so the hose is now only on the outside and not rusting internally unseen.
